Freedom in Christ, Freedom through Grace

Don’t look now, but it is already July, with Independence Day right around the corner! I hope you get to wave some flags, grill some hotdogs, or at least take in a fireworks display. I am sure we all remember eating watermelon, setting off firecrackers (and getting singed in the process) and the many other activities that make July 4th so much fun. Independence Day brings joy, but it also brings the opportunity to ponder a deeper freedom—one that outshines even the brightest sparkler.

Jesus tells us in John 8:36,

“So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.”

Our nation’s independence, hard-won through sacrifice, is a shadow of the greater freedom Christ offers through grace by faith in Him. But there is a paradox – we are made free but not so we can be free agents!

1 Corinthians 7:22 reminds us,

“The one who was called in the Lord as a slave is the Lord’s freedman.

Likewise, the one who was called as a free person is Christ’s slave.”

We are free in Christ, yet bound to Him as His devoted followers. This is the heart of true freedom. Galatians 5:13 says,

“For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.”

God’s grace doesn’t give us a pass to waste our lives in selfish ways; it frees us to do His will. As Christ’s “slaves,” we’re liberated to love fiercely, serve generously, and live with purpose—whether that’s encouraging young believers, helping at the church potluck, or praying steadfastly for our nation and our leaders at every level. As our Olivet kupuna, you have seen your share of Independence Day celebrations. Those fun-filled memories even may have faded a bit, but the freedom of being Christ’s slave never fades. It is God’s ever-new provision to His people, the strength to forgive, the courage to share your faith, and the joy of serving wherever and however God calls. This Independence Day, let’s celebrate God’s grace that frees us, to be Christ’s hands and feet and voice. Wave those flags, enjoy the fireworks, and sneak that extra pie slice. But above all, rejoice in our freedom to be Christ’s slaves—living His will with love. Happy 4th, Senior Ohana!

Grateful for His freedom!
