OUR HISTORY

Olivet Baptist Church was first launched as an independent Church (Mission Church) by Joseph P. Tyssowski, an attorney from Texas and an ordained Baptist preacher. In February 1941, the church voted to become a Southern Baptist Church and a SBC charter member, naming Olivet Baptist Church.

In 1943, Olivet paid off the Young Street property and started a building fund for new buildings. In 1944, Olivet purchased the Honolulu Vocational School located in the same block but facing South Beretania Street. Olivet broke ground for the new worship center on November 13, 1949 and the building was completed in 11 months. During this time, Olivet Baptist was growing as it saw a record attendance with 1016 in Sunday School and 217 in Sunday evening training.

Olivet Baptist Church remains committed to exist in the heart of Honolulu and serve as a beacon of light for Oahu. Throughout our rich history, one thing has remained constant, that is the unapologetic preaching of the entire Word of God. Come join us as we seek to love our community, no strings attached!
